A 2010 FANUC Still Welding Daily: Why Tested Refurbished Robots Beat the Fear of Used

Figure 1. An engineer checking a refurbished robot in live production: tested before it ships, working after it lands.

Ask a maintenance manager why they fear used robots and the answer usually involves a story of a machine that looked fine and failed on day two. Those stories are real, and they are almost always stories about equipment sold 'as-is'. The alternative is a documented machine. One foundry we work with still runs a FANUC M-710iC from 2010, originally bought new, now on its second life after refurbishment. Its alarm history, axis data and replacement records are on file, and it welds heavy castings every shift. The fear of used equipment usually collapses once the evidence is on the table.

What separates a tested robot from a painted robot

A cheap refurbishment is often cosmetic: clean, repaint, photograph, sell. A real refurbishment is a process. ZOTRADE's six steps start with sourcing and evaluation of usage history, then full disassembly to individual parts, replacement of every wear item from belts and seals to bearings, cables, fans and batteries, then testing, refinishing, certification and shipping. Between the painting and the packing, there is a 12-point inspection that verifies axes, backlash, safety circuits and repeatability against the manufacturer's specification.

That is the difference a buyer can hold in their hand: a test report with numbers, not adjectives. When something can be measured, it can be trusted, and when it can be trusted, the 60-day warranty that follows is a formality rather than a gamble.

Why older platforms are not a handicap

Industrial robots are built to run tens of thousands of hours. Gearboxes, motors and controllers on mainstream brands like FANUC, ABB, KUKA and Yaskawa have decades of parts availability because millions of units share the same architecture. A 2010 robot is not obsolete; it is proven. The parts ecosystem that supports it is deeper than the ecosystem for a brand-new niche model. That support chain is why refurbished machines in the 50+ countries we ship to keep running long after installation.

Check

What a tested refurbishment verifies

Axis movement

Smooth travel, no binding or abnormal noise

Backlash and repeatability

Within OEM specification, laser verified

Safety circuits

Full chain test, e-stop and interlocks functional

Controller and pendant

Clean boot, no alarm history, licensed options intact

Wear parts

Replaced new: belts, seals, bearings, cables, fans, batteries

Reliability that exceeds expectations

The foundry customer expected a used machine to need babysitting. What they found was the opposite: because the robot arrived with known condition and fresh wear parts, its first year of uptime was better than the last year of the previous robot on that line. A tested refurbished robot does not just match expectations; it quietly beats them, because the buyer starts from a defined baseline instead of a mystery.

The 12-point standard exists so 'tested' is a measurable word, not a marketing one. It covers mechanical travel and backlash, electrical boot and alarm history, safety chain continuity, and repeatability under load, with every result recorded against the manufacturer's specification. Add to that the parts reality: FANUC, ABB, KUKA and Yaskawa have supported these controller generations for decades, and millions of installed units guarantee a parts supply that niche equipment will never match. A tested robot on a supported platform is the safest way to buy used.

Ask for the test report of any robot in our stock. If the numbers look right, the robot will run right. See for yourself.
