FANUC vs ABB vs KUKA: Which Used Brand Fits a Small Factory?

We sell all three major brands, plus Yaskawa and a handful of others. We are not loyal to a logo-we are loyal to what keeps your line running. So here is the unvarnished version, which we rarely see written down anywhere else because most dealers push one brand over the others.

FANUC is the Toyota of industrial robots. Simple, tough, and parts are everywhere. Walk into any automation supply shop in the world and they will have a FANUC cable or fuse on the shelf. Best for welding and material handling, especially if your team already knows the iPendant. The downside? Older controllers look like they came from 2005-the interface is plain, the buttons are physical, and the software feels dated. But that is also why parts are cheap and technicians are easy to find. A 19-year-old FANUC is still repairable; a 10-year-old exotic brand might not be.

ABB is the programmer's choice. Better motion control, a genuinely nicer teach pendant with a color screen, and strong performance in machine tending and assembly. IRC5 controllers are still rock solid and will run for another decade. Used ABB units are slightly pricier than FANUC, but operators who have used both almost always prefer them. The programming language (RAPID) is clean and well documented. If you have a programmer on staff who enjoys his job, he will thank you for picking ABB.

KUKA is the heavy lifter. The KR series is the default for 200-plus kg payloads and body-shop welding. KRC4 controllers are capable and flexible, but expect a steeper learning curve and pricier spare parts. We recommend KUKA only when the payload genuinely demands it. Buying a KUKA for a 10 kg job is like using a sledgehammer for a pushpin-you will pay more, consume more power, and the big arm will actually be slower than a small one.

Yaskawa is the quiet fourth option. Reliable, underpriced on the used market, especially for small-payload assembly. Their Motoman controllers are simple and their parts are surprisingly cheap. We see a lot of small factories sleep on Yaskawa, then wish they had not once they realize how inexpensive it is to maintain.

Here is our honest take for a small factory starting out. Pick FANUC if you want the easiest parts supply and the widest pool of technicians. Pick ABB if you have a programmer who wants a better motion platform. Pick KUKA only if you truly need the heavy payload. Pick Yaskawa if you want the most robot for the money on light assembly. Brand loyalty is expensive-pick the platform that matches your people and your parts supply, not the one you saw in a movie.

Below we compare the four brands on the factors that actually matter: parts cost, programming difficulty, resale value, and typical used price. Use it as a decision table.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Which brand has the cheapest spare parts?
A: FANUC is the cheapest and most abundant, followed by Yaskawa. KUKA spares are the priciest.

Q: Is one brand easier to learn?
A: FANUC and Yaskawa are easiest for beginners. ABB is clean once you learn RAPID. KUKA's KRL has the steepest curve.

Q: Can I mix brands on one line?
A: Yes. They communicate via standard fieldbus (Profinet, EtherNet/IP). Most mixed lines work fine.

Q: Which holds value best?
A: FANUC and ABB hold used value best because demand is steady. Exotic brands drop faster.
