7 Signs a Used Robot Is a Good Deal (And 5 to Walk Away From)

Anyone can photograph a robot from a flattering angle. A clean floor, a blue wall, good lighting, and even a tired arm looks impressive. The difference between a deal and a disaster lives in the details most listings skip. We inspect hundreds of used robots a year, and the pattern is always the same: the good ones have paperwork, the bad ones have excuses.
Here are the seven signs we look for before we even quote a unit. First, a full power-on video of the actual unit, not a stock clip from the manufacturer's website. Second, known service history-where it ran, how many hours, what application it did. Third, the controller is included, not sold separately for "extra" (a missing controller can add $5,000-$8,000). Fourth, the teach pendant is present and working with no dead pixels. Fifth, a reasonable hour count, generally under 40,000 hours for most 6-axis models. Sixth, a warranty offered-even three months tells you the seller stands behind the product. Seventh, transparent wear photos at the wrist, the cables, and the base flange.
And here are the five signs we walk away from, every time. "As-is, untested" at any price. A robot without a controller. Rust at the base flange, which usually means coolant or oil has been leaking for years and has corroded the bearings. A seller who will not join a live video call and just sends one-way photos. And the price being 50% below market-someone already found the problem, and they are hoping you will not.
Our opinion? Most buyers over-focus on the sticker price and under-focus on the testing. A robot that costs $2,000 more but comes with a 48-hour test video is almost always the cheaper choice. The expensive robot is the one that sits in your receiving area for three weeks while you wait for a replacement servo from the other side of the world. We have bought units that looked perfect in photos and failed on our test bench-and we have bought units that looked rough and ran flawlessly. You cannot judge a robot by its cover.
Every robot we sell passes all seven good signs and fails all five bad ones. We send you the wear photos before you pay, not after. The table below turns this into a checklist you can print and use on any listing.
If you have a listing from somewhere else that you are unsure about, send it to us. We will give you an honest read for free. We would rather help you avoid a bad purchase than pretend we have everything in stock.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How many hours are too many?
A: Under 40,000 is comfortable. 40,000-60,000 is acceptable if tested. Over 60,000 means heavy maintenance budget.
Q: Can I inspect before buying?
A: Yes. We send live video calls and full running videos. Buyers are welcome to visit our Guangzhou facility.
Q: What if the listing has no warranty?
A: Treat it as a 100% repair bet. Budget 15-20% of the price for immediate spares.
Q: Should I buy from a trader or a workshop?
A: A workshop that tests is safer than a trader who resells untested. We are the workshop type.
