FANUC, ABB or KUKA? How to Choose a Used Robot Brand That Won't Strand Your Line

Figure 1. A multi-brand refurbishment floor — the practical reason we never push one brand on a customer.

Every week someone asks us which robot brand is 'the best': FANUC, ABB or KUKA. It is the wrong question, and we tell customers so. The right question is which brand keeps your specific line running longest in your specific country. Brand loyalty is expensive when it does not match your application, your voltage, your local service network and — above all — your spare parts supply.

What the big three actually excel at

FANUC is the density champion. Its controller-to-robot integration is tight, its electronics are famously reliable, and support infrastructure exists almost everywhere in the world. If you want a machine-tending or palletizing robot with the least fuss and the deepest spare-parts ecosystem, FANUC is a safe default.

ABB's strength is welding and flexible motion. The IRB 2600 class — we stock it refurbished — is a genuine arc-welding workhorse with excellent path accuracy, and ABB's programming environment is one of the easier ones for integrators to master. ABB also covers heavy material handling well.

KUKA owns the heavy end. The KR 210 and KR 200 class robots handle 200+ kg payloads that smaller arms cannot touch. Automotive heritage means these robots were built for brutal 3-shift cycles, which makes them excellent candidates for refurbishment — provided the seller actually rebuilds them.

Then read this before deciding

Application first. A welding robot needs different path accuracy and wrist flexibility than a palletizing robot. Payload and reach decide more than brand. Check: does the brand have a model whose payload, reach and repeatability land inside your requirement window?

Region second. If you are in Vietnam, Thailand, Nigeria or Mexico, ask one question before any brand question: where can I buy a servo, a controller board or a teach pendant for this robot within a week? OEM distributors in emerging markets are often thin. A multi-brand refurbisher with 10,000+ parts in stock can sometimes beat the OEM's own lead time.

Electrical environment third. Voltage, frequency and the local certification regime (CE, CCC, local safety marks) matter. A robot that needs a different transformer, or a control cabinet that fails local inspection, is a cost nobody mentioned on the listing page.

What we do differently is simple: we carry 14 brands, not one. When a customer tells us the application, we quote the two or three robots that genuinely fit, and we explain why we would not sell the fourth. Sometimes that means recommending a cheaper machine, and sometimes a dearer one. We have 1,200+ factories across 50+ countries who keep coming back because the match was right the first time.

The ecosystem argument nobody mentions

A robot's true support network is not the factory that made it — it is the ecosystem in your region: which brands your local integrators know, which controllers local technicians can program, which spares local traders stock. A FANUC with a weak local ecosystem can be harder to keep running than an ABB with a strong one, even though the machine itself is excellent.

This is why our advice is always the same regardless of which brand wins on paper: check who can service it in your city before you decide. And it is why we carry 14 brands rather than one — so the brand decision is yours to make on real evidence, not ours to make on convenience. When the match is right the first time, the robot runs, the customer returns, and the ecosystem question stops being a question.

About ZOTRADE

ZOTRADE is a China-based refurbisher and exporter of used industrial robots, serving 1,200+ factories in 50+ countries since 2010. We rebuild robots from FANUC, ABB, KUKA, Yaskawa, OTC, Nachi, Staubli, Epson and other leading brands through a six-step refurbishment process, test every machine on our 12-point standard, back it with a 60-day warranty, and keep 10,000+ spare parts in stock. From welding to palletizing, painting to machine tending, we deliver tested robots at about 45% of the new price — with the documentation, freight and support to make the whole purchase work end to end.

The bottom line

Brand is a starting point, not a conclusion. The best brand for your line is the one your region can service, your team can program and your application can exploit — and the only way to know that is to look at the evidence rather than the logo. Fourteen brands sit in our stock precisely so the answer to 'which brand?' can be honest: the one that fits. Ask the ecosystem question, read the test report, and let the machine's condition finish the argument the brand name started.

Tell us your application, payload and region — we will recommend the two or three used robot models that fit, with prices and test reports, within one working day.
